Trespa panels
For areas of high traffic where vandalism may be a problem, a further option is Trespa panels. These are sealed 13mm thick particle boards, which can be used both internally and externally. The product does not scratch and is ideal for use where graffiti might be expected. They can be used in conjunction with all the Laidlaw systems.
They are available in a wide range of colours, an advantage where colour matching to a particular interior design is required or where visual contrast is a key issue.
Perforated steel panels
Perforated panels are durable and ideal for areas of heavy traffic. They are available in either polyester powder-coated 3mm thick mild steel, or stainless steel. They provide a clearly visible screen and barrier yet the perforations allow light to permeate, making them particularly effective in stairwells that benefit from natural daylight.
The standard polyester-coated mild steel panels have a 75% clear area and are available in a variety of colours to match the rest of the internal d'cor. They are usually used in conjunction with nylon-sleeved steel uprights, although they can also be used in the Combi system with stainless steel uprights, if required.
Stainless steel perforated panels are used mainly in conjunction with stainless steel uprights. They are particularly suited for use with the 3kN heavy-duty system (see below).
Weldmesh panels
Weldmesh panels consist of 50 x 50 x 4mm weldmesh, within a 10mm diameter steel frame, all polyester powder-coated to a choice of colours. They are normally used only in conjunction with the Nylon and Timber systems.
Vertical bar panels
This type of infill panel has a frame of 10mm diameter polyester-coated steel bar, with vertical bars of the same material at no more than 100mm centres. They are normally used in conjunction with nylon uprights, although in a Combi system they could be used in conjunction with stainless steel.
From the point of view of inclusive design, the choice of colour provides plenty of scope to ensure that the balustrade is easily identified by visually impaired people. It is particularly suitable for use on stairs that may be used by children under 5, as the bars cannot easily be climbed and their spacing should prevent a child being held fast by the balustrade.
