Laidlaw - the architectural ironmongery, timber doorsets and railing systems supplier, has supplied timber doorsets and ironmongery to the value of £200,000 for the prestigious new Biosciences building at York University.

Completed on schedule in June 2002, the £21 million project provides a purpose-built environment for York University's Department of Biology - one of the largest and most successful research and teaching departments in the country.

The new facility is part of a major capital investment programme at the University which also includes extensive new PFI-funded residential accommodation, a new retail centre and a number of bespoke buildings on the adjacent Science Park.

The Biosciences project involved the construction of a new 10,000 sq m facility, comprising three independent blocks. The three storey blocks are linked by a full height semi-glazed atrium which provides clear access and circulation space to all three blocks. Access to the individual blocks is via link bridges which cross the atrium at first and second floor levels.

We started out with the intention of specifying the doors and ironmongery as two separate packages. However, following the launch of Laidlaw's range of complete doorsets, it made financial sense to try the combined package, especially as we already knew the quality of the ironmongery from our previous work with Laidlaw.

As with any project of this size, it hasn't all been plain sailing however, Laidlaw have worked closely with us to resolve any problems quickly and to our mutual satisfaction. On the whole, the delivery of the door package has proved extremely effective."
